Structured Literacy Tools and Strategies that Work

Hi, I’m Beth – A Tutor & Teacher who has taught just about every kind of student out there.

After over a decade of teaching in public schools, I’ve seen firsthand how students can fall through the cracks — not because they’re not trying, but because they’re not getting what they need, when they need it.

That’s why I started tutoring. I wanted to give students customized support to help them overcome reading and writing challenges — and gain confidence in themselves as learners.

These days, I divide my time between small-group structured literacy teaching in the classroom and personalized one-on-one tutoring online. I love both roles — and I especially love how I can bring ideas from the classroom into my tutoring (and vice versa!).

How I Support Student Learning

I tutor use a combination of:
Orton-Gillingham multi-sensory reading instruction
Self-Regulated Strategy Development (SRSD) for writing
Targeted tools and strategies to build fluency, comprehension, and independent learning skills

Lots of structured literacy instruction is focused on early reading skills. Students often get support with spelling and decoding. But students often continue to need help with more complex writing and comprehension skills. Structured literacy and the Science of Reading have lots to offer for older students, too.

I’ve worked with students from kindergarten to graduate school, but most of my current students are in those key transition years, navigating middle school or high school. They’re capable and curious — and they benefit from consistent learning routines with enough variety to keep them engaged and growing.

And as a teacher, I know that a beautiful resource is useless if it doesn’t fit my student’s learning objectives. That’s why I started creating lots of my own morphology lesson plans, assessments, and morphology review games. I create tools that you can use flexibly to help your students reach their goals. These short, straightforward, practice activities help students connect new learning to what they already know. They are great for reinforcing vocabulary taught in the general curriculum, or for reteaching and review.
